It hadn't been long since Ember had been moved out of the cramped metal cage he had lived in since he had been a yearling. But he was already settling into his new enclosure as if he'd always been there. At the moment, the huge male wolf was surveying his enclosure from his perch on top of a large rock near the edge of the enclosure. Lying before him was almost a perfect replica of a sloping forest hillside, with bare rocks here and there and soft dirt strewn with dead leaves in others. The center-front of the enclosure, the part closest to the large viewing window through which Guests could look inside, was mostly grassy and open, with the artificial sunlight shining freely on it. But the fringes of the enclosure were densly planted with thick bushes and various trees, including a few pines and aspens. In the artificial light that mimicked the weak, pre-dawn light, his black fur seemed to melt into the shadows behind him, leaving only his amber eyes burning brightly.
His early morning patrol done, the wolf turned and walked towards the back of the enclosure. The terrain of the whole enclosure sloped so that the back was elevated higher than the open meadow at the front. At the top of the slope, the back wall was camoflagued to seem like a natural rocky cliffside. In a hidden crevice on this rock wall was an opening, barely even distinguishable from the viewing area. The narrow opening lead to a cave, the ceiling curving up so that a person could easily stand up inside it after ducking through the entrance, and the floor covered in soft, dry dirt. The wolf padded silently to the very back of the den, where the weak light from outside barely filtered in. There, tucked away safely and still asleep, was his mate.
