Wolf and his bodyguards began hanging a bit further back as Fox approached the cave. Wolf heard Fox making quiet chirping sounds that reminded Wolf of a nature documentary he had seen in which mountain lion clubs made similar noises to communicate with their mother. The cave looked like part of a mountainside jutting up from the ground. It had been built by carefully laying huge rocks together so that they fit like puzzle pieces. Intentionally, the rocks were all different shapes and sizes so that the effect looked as natural as possible. In the middle of the structure of boulders was a small opening where one giant rock leaned against another, creating a triangular hole that a person would have to crouch or even crawl to get through.
After a few moments of Fox making his gentle calls, an answering call came from inside the cave. The sound was low and harsh, but sounded strangely like a housecat's meow, that is, if the housecat weighed 200 lbs and had a bad cough. The sound of something heavy shuffling agaisnt hard-packed dirt was heard before a face appeared from the shadows of the cave. The male mountain lion peered out, his eyes a mixture of pale greens, blues, and golds. Many scars could be seen marring the animal's face in thin lines where the fur didn't grow out quite smooth.
Unfortunately, this cat had had particularly bad treatment at the circus. Animals who could be tamed and controlled were better taken care of so that they could look majestic for the audiences. However, there were some animals who were too hard to control to be used for shows. Not wanting to waste his investments, the owner of the circus has used such animals for other, often illegal, money-making schemes. This particular mountain lion had always been stubborn and aggressive with trainers who tried to force him to do tricks. Therefore, one of the uses he had been put to was animal fights. After hours, after the circus had closed down, some of the aggressive animals had sometimes been taken to discreet locations where fights could be staged for people to place bets on. This mountain lion had been pitted against dogs, a few other big cats, and even a bear. He had somehow come out on top at every fight, but the scars on his body and the rips on his ears showed how violent those fights had been.
When the mountain lion saw Fox, his torn ears perked up. But when he saw the other men a short distance behind Fox, the lion bared his teeth and snarled, his ears folding flat against his head.
