Something I was thinking about today was the challenge of how much time it takes to deal with combat encounters. Most of Wraeclast is crawling with monsters, and so to get anywhere, there's going to have to be a lot of fighting. If it takes several days or weeks to resolve every encounter, this could easily create a situation where people decide it's just not worth the time to go anywhere outside of Lioneye's Watch or do any quests. My goal for this group is to focus on the Act 2 region, so I at least want players to be encouraged to make the journey from Lioneye's Watch to Axiom Prison.
So I have the following suggestion:
When a player encounters a group of monsters in a location where they have already fought the same type of monsters before, there can be an option to skip the battle and summarize it in a single post. The outcome of the summarized battle would be roughly equal to the outcome of the previous encounter the player had with that same type of monsters in the same location. So, for example, suppose Xerephon defeats these three sand spitters on the coast, and in the process uses 10% of his mana and suffers a minor flesh wound. The next time he's traveling along this same stretch of coast, if he encounters another group of sand spitters, the player could opt to summarize it in one post, which results in him receiving a second flesh wound and using another 10% of his mana. Or, if he thinks he can get a better result the second time around, he can choose to play it out turn-by-turn as normal. This should help cut down on some of the tedium when a character is traveling through the same location multiple times.
There would be two exceptions to this rule: One is when dealing with bosses like Hillock, where every encounter needs to be played out fully, because the boss could potentially do something different each time. The second is if the character has somehow gotten less powerful since the previous encounter, for example if they have lost important equipment (like if Xerephon came back without his armour on) or if they picked up a significant status ailment (such as if he had become poisoned, or broken his arm, etc).
The way it would work, post-by-post, is when the GM recognizes that this is similar enough to a previous encounter to be skippable, he should note that in the post that describes the appearance of the monsters. The player can then choose to skip the encounter by writing a summary post that covers the whole battle; or the player can choose to play the encounter normally by posting just a single combat action.
