The group shook their heads "No, we've been fighting our way through the island for at least a day now, probably longer. You've been with us the whole time, you don't remember storming the city only to find it abandoned? Or the team becoming sick? It seems only me and you avoided becoming sick." Victor replied. Almost as if on cue, Ren began coughing violently again.

Richard shook his head at Victor's explanation. "No. I don't." This was strange, while Richard's memory was not particularly good, he would have at least have remembered the events of a day. Especially if those events included finding an abandoned city. There was a lot that still needed to be answered, however. The sickness was only the first one. "The sickness. How did the twins get it? What is it?"

All this talking was making his throat hurt...

Victor frowned a little "That isn't good, we are all showing bizarre symptoms." He said quietly. "The twins got sick a couple hours after we got here, I do not know what it is that is ailing them. I have tried using my healing magic, but I can't find anything wrong. Your mind seems to be blanking out parts of this trip, I've been hearing voices, Jarred has been hallucinating every now and then. All of these ailments started around the same time..." He murmured. "Not to mention the dark aura of this place..." He murmured.

"I can sense it too." Lin replied. "Faintly."

Victor nodded "Something here is emitting a very, very strong energy. Like a really high powered machine, only magical and very dark, filled with malice and hate."

This new revelation was one that put a few more things in perspective. The sickness was sounding less like an actual disease and more like some malign presence. That was the only explanation that Richard's limited experience with magic could think of.

Richard looked around quickly before he spoke. "What if it isn't sickness? Corruption? Magic to drain our power?" This place was starting to look well beyond Richard's abilities, at least for the moment.

Victor nodded a little "It is not a spell that has been cast on us. Being from the Fairy city on the Altia isles, I've learned plenty about magic and know for sure we are not under someone's spell or manipulation." He said. "However, this could be the effect of the exposure to this powerful magic. Only us spellcasters would really notice it, the rest of you would likely feel it like a dense fog which isn't too noticeable since this whole place looks like it should be foggy. But there is incredibly powerful waves of magic energy filling the air, I do not know where the source is but the majority of you are not going to be accustom to this. Frankly, even many of the fairies would be overwhelmed, and they live right ontop of a magical hotspot just like this. These ailments everyone is getting could be the end result of over-exposure to the high levels of magic in the air here. It isn't effecting me because I am accustom to it... The voices I am hearing are not from the magic, there is an entity somewhere on the island that is speaking to us... I just don't think the rest of you can hear it"

Victor looked around at the others. "I think we need to go back to the abandoned city and search it more closely for any clues we may have missed. It beats wandering in the dark." He added.

Richard nodded at Victor's explanation, understanding the base of what he was saying. There was something malign here, powered by magic that, while not actively ment to do so, affected them in different, but negative, ways. While the safest course of action would be to return back to port and come back when they were better prepared, the right course would be to get information.

"Which way to the city?" Ouch.

"The city is to the east of here. It's on the way back to the ship." Victor replied simply. "We shouldn't linger here too long, so lets try to get our information and get out quickly. Also, stay on guard. I am pretty sure those shadow-creatures will be back any time now. They don't seem to stay down for very long when we take them out." He stated as he started to lead the way to the east. The other three followed along behind him.

Richard nodded at Victor when his plan was stated. Starting here for any extended period of time would be detrimental to everyone's health. Hopefully when they get away from the island, the "sickness" would go away.

Taking a position at the rear of the group, Richard kept scanning the area around them, watching for an attack by the shadow people.

(*Insert "We are Surrounded! Good!" joke here. Even though it is actually true in this case. Hopefully there are no reinforcements behind them, or this could get messy.)

Richard looked around at the circle of shadow people surrounding them and smiled. Seems whatever mind that was controlling them put it's faith in the ambush tactic, and used it well. If this went into a straight up fight, the shadows would have a distinct advantage. The trick then, would be to ensure that they were unable to bring the full force of their numbers against the party. A break through was needed.

Richard looked at the others, the smile still on his face. "I have a plan. Rin, you're with me. Jarred, you're the rear guard." [sub]Ouch[/sub] "We're breaking through their encirclement." He drew his weapons before finishing. "Any objections?"

If there were none, he led the charge against one section of the shadow people.

(I had to chuckle a little, because I am writing the Realism story and in the story the fight I just wrote was a similar setup, and you made the same move the Alphas in the story did. xD )

Victor turned his head to Richard when the man spoke and he nodded a little to the plan to say that he agreed and thought it was a good idea. The previous fight didn't go very well when they all got surrounded and just held their ground, and with the twins Rin and Lin getting sick he feared that holding their ground in the center wasn't going to work a second time. Since Richard had given orders to everyone but Victor and Lin, Victor gave his own instructions to Lin. "Stay close to me, get ready to use your biggest fire spell. Doesn't need to be powerful, just needs to hit a large area." He stated as he ran right behind Richard. Victor was a pretty powerful mage, he didn't necessarily need guards to protect him, but at the same time he was old and wasn't overly fast, if too many ganged up on him he probably wouldn't be able to evade them and if they lost Victor the team would be in a lot of trouble. They'd lose a little over half of the team's strength if they lost Victor.

Lin nodded and ran alongside Victor. While her brother Rin took the front lines alongside Richard.

Jarred took up the rear, running right behind Victor and Lin. He kept watch on their backs and kept his pistol at the ready incase the shadows started getting too close, however he held his fire for now since he was unsure of what the plan was going to be and he didn't want to waste his bullets spraying while he ran, and end up needing to reload during a crucial moment.

The shadows that had been surrounding them started collapsing the circle, chasing after the group. But as the group ran towards the edge of the shadows, the circle of enemies ended up being placed mostly behind them instead of all around them. Directly infront of Richard and the front line was three shadow people, blocking the way out of the circle. One was armed with a spear, the other two were armed with swords. Then, there was also three more shadow people on both the left and right of the group of players, however only one of the three on each side were close enough to strike at the players. If Richard and the team kept running and pushed through the shadow's front lines, the entire shadow group would be behind them. But if they stopped to fight here the three on both sides would close in on them, and the rest would be moving in from behind shortly after.

Victor waved his hands out to the sides, creating long wall-like barriers on the left and right sides of the group to keep the shadow-people that were on those sides back for now. However these barriers would only delay them for a couple seconds. It at least stopped those shadow people from attacking right now, there was still the matter of the three in front. The spear-man was in the front of the other two swordsmen by just a little, prepared to stab at the first person within its reach.

((Not much of a surprise considering that it's a very basic tactical decision. And thanks for the MS Paint map. I'll try to  supplement that as it becomes appropriate. Anyway, time for me to follow Richard's own saying.))

It was at this point that Richard began to shift away from the tactical and towards the practical. Victor's timely barriers were perfect in this situation, keeping the remaining shadows from swarming them before they were ready. Lin preparing an area attack was perfect as well. He would need to ask both of the magi about their abilities after this, perhaps when they are on the boat.

Don't think. Do. Richard told himself as he charged towards the spear-shadow, his shield out to catch the thrust of the spear and knock the shadow down. Risky, but it might pay off. "Rin, right sword! Jarred, two rounds into the left sword!" He quickly ordered, hoping that the barriers would hold for just a moment longer. Just until they got rid of the first group...

(Depends, I personally think it is the best choice, but I know people who would say otherwise. And no problem, whenever fights end up getting on a large scale and get complicated with many opponents I try making a simple map. Both to help me keep track of where everyone is, and to help everyone else.)

The barriers did not last long, the shadow people slammed their weapons into the barriers again and again, until they shattered like glass.

His prediction was spot-on, these shadow people did not fight with much skill so as they approached the spearman jabbed its spear directly at Richard. He would be able to easily deflect it with his shield, considering he predicted it beforehand. Leaving the shadow-spearman open to be knocked down successfully by Richard. As it hit the ground a crystal spike shot up from the ground and stabbed through the shadow's body, killing it and making it disappear in a puff of smoke. Victor had seen the opportunity and helped to take that one out as quickly as possible.

Following his instructions Rin veered off slightly to the right to go after the right-most swordsman. As he neared the swordsman it took a swing at him with its sword, slashing horizontally. Rin bashed the sword out of the way with his own shield, then stabbed his sword through the shadow's chest in one swift motion, not stopping just plowing through. The shadow disappeared in a puff of smoke.

Jarred was also quick to follow orders, facing forward and drawing his pistol to take one shot at the shadow's chest. The shadow, as expected, jumped to the side to evade the shot. At which point Jarred immediately fired a second shot while the shadow was mid-dodge. Striking it in the chest and making that one also disappear in a puff of smoke. Jarred continued running past Richard.

Lin and Victor also ran past Richard, flipping their formation so that they were out of the circle of shadow people, but so that Richard and Rin were still between them and the shadows.

The shadows were grouping close together as they pursued the fleeing humans, the longer they chased the tighter the group was getting. The main group was a short distance away, they were not a threat yet but would be ontop of Richard and his team within a few seconds. The nearest shadows were the ones who had taken down the barriers, they were nicely lined up where the barriers had been.

((This is becoming a pattern for me. Welp, might as well throw a bit of a wrench into the situation.))

Richard grinned when he saw the plan come together. He couldn't have asked for an easier opponent than these shadow creatures... Though it would be getting much more difficult from here on out. Now it was a matter of timing and luck, lots of luck.

Hopefully nothing bad happens.

"Hold the line. Try to get as many-" He coughed, his scarred vocal chords protesting the extended use. He cursed inwardly, why did they have to act up now? [size=8pt]"With your spells."[/size] [sub]Ow.[/sub] There's magic now, I think I can get them healed... After this.

"Now Lin." Victor called out as he saw the shadow people starting to group together and run at them. Lin stepped infront of Richard and took a deep breath, then pressed both of her hands forwards with her palms out. Flames poured out of her palms in a cone-like shape infront of her, covering a fair amount of ground. Seven of the shadow people were caught in the burst of flames, all of them let out a screech as they seemingly melted away into nothing.

Victor then slammed his staff into the ground and a little ways further behind Lin's cone an orb appeared in the middle of the shadow people Lin had not gotten. It looked like it suddenly sucked in air or energy or something from the area around it, really quickly it took a split second, then is suddenly exploded. Not a firey explosion but more like a massive burst of energy. The shadow people around it all were thrown to the sides and disappeared in a puff of smoke.

There was two shadow people that Lin's cone had missed, although Jarred took these out with two quick shots from his pistol. Which left four remaining, the ones too far south to get caught in the AOE attacks.

It may have seemed like the shadow people were easy, and that they were losing every battle on the surface. But deep down beneath what things looked like on the surface, they were edging closer and closer to a flawless victory in the war. This group shadow people took a heavy loss in this battle, ten more of their people died, and the last four shadows stood no chance they would lose this battle too, but this was their greatest victory thus far. They have achieved their objective in every battle, and the humans have achieved nothing more then killing 16 weaker shadow people their entire stay on the island. If the humans did not figure things out quickly, they may not make it off the island alive.
