Although the claw weapon was too small to grip with both hands, Thomas was able to grab his wrist to increase his thrusting power. Such a move proved effective as the nails sunk into the putrid flesh of the undead's shoulder. Thomas felt something pop a moment before the undead's entire arm fell off to plop into the wet sand. The zombie looked over at it's arm on the ground before looking back at Thomas with a moan. It began to lift it's arm up to grab at Thomas's ragged robe that served as his clothes. As it did so the other two zombies slowly turned to face the life that was Thomas.

(oops, misunderstood about the weapon)

Thomas quickly returned to a ready stance. Suddenly, the fist weapon felt far more comfortable in his hands - this wasn't the first time he'd had to defend himself with something of that size and shape. Rather than throw himself at the zombies in a panic he took in their sluggish movements and waited for a chance.

"Alright you lot, let's see if you know how to fight dirty..."

The second the first zombie lurched towards him, he stepped to its armless side and slammed his weapon into the back of its skull.. Then he pushed its body into the second zombie to distract it while he turned to face the third.

Morganna seeing the hulking dead figure in front of her, and the many other bodies laying about, carefully began moving forward, not eager to see if any were still standing, but cautious enough to keep her glass makeshift shard of a weapon ready just in case, gripped in her gloved hands. Moving carefully forward, she moved onward toward the walled settlement, senses high and on alert just in case anything appeared.

"I'm definitely in no mood to help any of them, that's for sure" Anastasia replied, following along after the other woman. "It's thanks to them I'm stuck here surrounded by undead and miles of ocean."

She tested the weight of the stick in her hands now that the gem had been added to it. The damn thing was flimsy but it seemed to be holding together for now.

"So how did you end up on zombie island?" She asked curiously.

(not sure if Irinastasia are actually moving yet or not, but I'll describe the next area anyway)

The beach continued eastward for a few dozen metres more and then went around a corner northward, with tall cliffs blocking the view of what was beyond. As the girls approached this sharp bend in the coastline, they would notice a number of dead bodies lying around, half-rotted, with fresh trauma to the head and neck. They weren't moving at all, and so if they had been zombies once it would seem someone had already been through here recently to put them down. There were footprints in the wet dirt leading northward. The beach extended far beyond, with sand and dirt giving way to a flat tideswept rocky shelf, and then rough hills beyond. Off in the distance, there were wisps of smoke rising up, suggesting some civilization still existed on this cursed island. Thus far, there was no movement ahead, but there were enough nooks in the cliffside as to hide just about anything or anyone.

Thomas's strike was hard and true, dropping the zombie quickly. Although the quick second death caused it to drop like a sack of bricks before he could shove it at the other ones. The two remaining zombies quickly were closing in on him on either side, leaving only behind him as a clear escape. The one on his right reached him first since it hadn't been slowed by walking over the body of the one Thomas had killed. Lifting it's arms it swiped them side to side to smash them into his ribs with crushing force.

Irina shrugged. "I'm Karui." As if that explained everything. In fact her words summed up her oppressed people's situation in the world fairly well since they had been beaten by the Templar and it's people. Most Karui nowadays were either slaves or exiles. Those few that weren't lived meager lives meager lives in the slums of Oriath trying to scrape enough to not starve day to day. Most of the females were forced into being whores for Oriathinans who wanted something 'different'. "Come on. No use staying here and waiting for more of the dead to find us." She said before leading the way towards the gap in the cliffs. "Look, smoke. We should head there to see if it's a settlement. Anything could be hiding behind the rubble or in the cliffs though, so let's stay near the water." She suggested, pointing up the beach towards where the smoke was raising before being sheered off by the seabreeze.

Luckily for Morganna, the bodies seemed truly dead to her and not one twitched even as a vulture swooped down and began feeding on one. Soon enough she was next to the wooden fence and slipped though the gate quickly at the behest of a dirty, tired looking guard with one arm in a sling. (Post in Lioneye's Watch)

As much as there was danger lurking among the cliffs, it could also be said that there was danger in straying too close to the water, for it was just as possible for a zombie to be lurking in the shallows just beneath the water's surface, or clinging to the edge of the rocky shelf ready to climb up onto it. Fortunately for Irina and Anastasia, no such threats were lurking here at the moment. It was just more inanimate bodies. The stillness of the corpses, combined with the chilling wind and sea spray, and the dimming of the sun behind dark clouds made this place feel very cold and desolate, like might be found on some obscure level of Purgatory. The smooth rock under foot had a wavy contour, as the water had shaped it, which made it a bit awkward to walk on, especially in bare feet. It seemed to be low tide right now, which meant that in a few hours this shelf was going to be fully submerged, and Beast help anyone still standing here when the tide rolls in.

In among the cliff edge there were numerous little passages and clefts carved by the sea over millions of years. Many of them far too narrow for a human to squeeze through, but perfectly capable of concealing small animals. The few that were large enough for humans seemed to lead into a twisting labyrinth of rock and cliff that was not only treacherous to walk on, given the smooth and uneven wet stone underfoot, but was surely even more perilous to explore without knowing the schedule of the tides.

There was little of practical value on this rocky shelf, and so it was best to press on further. The shelf went about 200 metres until it gave way to sand and dirt again. The coastline veered slightly eastward here, creating a little sandy cove where a lot of debris was washing up from a confluence of currents. There were more corpses here, and large volumes of driftwood and seaweed scattered about. There were also plenty of sharp rocks and seashells to hurt one's feet on if one didn't proceed with a careful eye to the ground.

Up ahead there was something of interest. Half-buried in a hill of sand thirty feet from the water's edge, there was a wooden trunk that looked to have drifted in from a shipwreck. The lid was off and its contents (what looked like a pile of torn rags and waterlogged books) were spilled all over the sand. As with the previous places, someone had already been here, and so it was unlikely that anything of value was left in the pile. However, a glint of blue light caught Anastasia's eye, coming from the sand nearby. It looked like a blue gem was half-buried in the dirt.

Before anyone could approach further, however, there was a sudden movement from behind the old chest. A strange-looking crustacean the size of a small dog emerged from its hiding place behind the trunk and seized upon the buried gem, sucking it up into its stingray-like mouth along with much of the sand around it. Irina would recognize this creature as a sand spitter, one of the native monsters of Wraeclast. Irritating pests in the best of times, they could be surprisingly dangerous if encountered in large numbers, especially when they had the element of surprise.

The sand spitter perked up as it sensed two humans approaching. It raised its lobster-like tail briefly in a threatening stance, like a skunk getting ready to spray. It held this pose for half a second, and then it decided not to linger, and quickly scuttled away towards the cliffs, disappearing up a sloping dirt path. Humans weren't the only scavengers on these beaches, it seemed.

The force of the zombie's blow knocked the air from Thomas's lungs. Thankfully, he'd attempted to jump away from the blow at the last minute rather than take it head on. Rolling as he hit the ground, Thomas found himself a few feet behind his original position. He rose shakily to his feet, warily eyeing the zombies in front of him. This time he would be more careful. He circled to his right to ensure the zombies could only come at him one at a time, then dug his feet into the sand as he waited. The second the foremost zombie reached for him, he struck!

Too hurt to fully extend his right arm, Thomas decided on a different tactic. Stepping forward he slammed his forehead into the undead's nose before spinning his body and driving his weapon into its hip! A quick twist of his wrist to pop the joint out of its socket was followed by a swift, hard push from his left arm in the hopes of knocking the creature down.

Moving into a better position so they didn't flank him, Thomas could feel the flesh of the zombie deform under his headbutt. First the nose was pulped, then the brittle cheekbones snapped. His attempt at dislocating the leg was effective, but not before the undead had flung an arm around his neck. It wasn't able to get a grip on him, but it did cause Thomas to pitch forward just at the second zombie swung it's arms up, catching the man right on the chin and knocking up up and back over his heels.

"Crap, Spitter. Rarely only ever just one on it's own." Irina stated, lifting her sword to ready a block should the spitter deliver it's payload. "They turn sand into something as hard as a sling stone. Careful." She warned.

Thomas wasn't entirely sure what had happened: one minute he was pushing a zombie off, the next he was on his back. He rolled over onto his knees but almost fell back down onto the sand as the world swam around him. Realizing he was likely still in danger he slammed his fist into the sand to reorient himself before once again moving to his feet. Disoriented, he put up his guard and swung his head from left to right to locate his undead enemies.

"Oh good. I can't wait to meet it's friends" Anastasia replied dryly. Her fingertips ran along the wood making up her makeshift wand, checking for any sign of breakage. She wasn't familiar with the creature she'd just seen and had to begrudgingly admit that she was grateful for the company of someone who recognised it.

It took a few moments to make the sea to go back down out of the sky and to get to his feet. Those seconds might have cost Thomas dearly in another situation, but luckily for him the zombies had gotten tangled together and fallen as well. Neither of them had attempted to get back up onto their feet, instead both of them were pulling themselves across the sand towards Thomas's feet. Trails of blood and organs stained the stand red in their path.

Thomas collected himself. Noting his enemy's disadvantageous position he promptly walked over and stomped on the closest head, then went to repeat the action on the second one assuming he was able.

The first disabled zombie was easily made short work of. However during the few seconds it took to stomp it's head in the other zombie grabbed Thomas's supporting leg and sunk it's rotting teeth into it, breaking the skin and sinking into the muscle.

Luckily it didn't hit his tendons and the blood seeping from the wound made it so he could slip out of the zombie's grip long enough to cave it's skull in.

Finally alone for the moment, the other groups of undead seemed still unaware of the battle. Looking around Thomas would see that the beach narrowed to a small path between the cliff and surf to the north.

"Well he seemed to not be in the mood for a fight at least." Irina chuckled when the Spitter fled. "I'm going to check that chest for anything useful. Keep an eye out for any more Spitters or Zombies that come near while I do." She asked before walking over to the chest and trying to pull it out of the sand with a grunt. "Damn! Must be stuck tight." She said before kneeling and starting to rifle through the chest.

"Alright" Anastasia replied, standing nearby and looking around for any sign of approaching enemies. She was still being guarded around the other woman and had gone back to saying the minimal amount she had to for the time being. Opening up and getting too friendly with other people had only led to pain and betrayal in the last couple of years. It was better to keep people at a distance and not give them the chance to fuck you over, she thought to herself.

As was visible from afar, the old trunk was mostly filled with books and clothing. Rooting around in it, Irina could confirm that the books were indeed all mush from water damage, and the clothing was a tangled mess of soaked and tattered fabric. Maybe something useful could be extracted from the pile--there seemed to be at least a pair of wool stockings and a couple of ripped linen shirts among other things, as well as a pair of men's leather shoes that might be too big for both of these women--but it would all have to be dried out first. Given the two sets of human footprints already surrounding this trunk, if there was anything else of value in here, someone would have taken it already.

There were two paths leading forward from here. The larger path followed the coastline before turning north to go inland, where the wisps of smoke were coming from. The other path was narrower and branched off to the west, and that was the direction the sand spitter had gone with the blue gem it gobbled up. Anastasia could see the creature scuttling around at the top of the path, 30 yards away, moving back and forth between some rocks.

Irina made a growl of frustration and slammed the lid of the chest shut. "Picked clean already." She said pushing back to her feet and looking at the two paths. "You want to go after the spitter? That gem would buy us two beds maybe." She asked, looking over Anastasia and lingering on her long, exposed legs.

Thomas took a moment to check his ankle. The bleeding wasn't too bad, and thankfully he could walk on it. Still, the battle had been messy. Normally he'd slip off into an uncaring crowd but there was no such luxury here. There was nothing to do but keep moving down the beach, so that was what he did.

"Dammit" Anastasia muttered, frustrated that the chest had already been looted. "Maybe whoever emptied it isn't far. I'm sure between us we could convince them to part with what they took." Anastasia's dark way of thinking would have surprised her even a few weeks ago but she'd been through too much recently to maintain her usual sunny outlook. That bitch of an ex-lover and the Templars had taken that from her.

Anastasia looked toward the spitter, noticing Irina's eyes tracing her legs and silently liking the attention. "I'm concerned that it'll come after us if we turn our backs on it. I'd rather deal with it before it gets the chance" she added, glancing down at Irina's breasts.
